What pitch actually measures
When vocal-fold vibration is reasonably regular, fundamental frequency (F0) describes how often that pattern repeats each second. The unit is hertz. A faster repetition generally sounds higher; a slower repetition generally sounds lower.
Speaking pitch is not one fixed value. It rises and falls throughout a sentence. That is why this site reports a median across usable frames and separately describes pitch movement.
Why a single cutoff does not work
Research and clinical resources sometimes describe pitch regions that listeners are more likely to associate with masculine, androgynous, or feminine presentation. Those regions overlap. They are population observations—not rules that can determine the gender of an individual speaker.
Pitch can be evidence about one sound characteristic. It is not evidence of someone’s gender identity.
Other cues listeners may hear
A browser microphone cannot capture every cue equally well. This site’s “spectral brightness” result is a limited proxy and should not be read as a complete resonance analysis.
How to compare recordings more meaningfully
- Use the same phrase each time.
- Keep the same microphone and room.
- Maintain a similar distance and comfortable volume.
- Make several recordings rather than relying on one.
- Compare dimensions separately instead of chasing a composite score.
Voice practice should remain comfortable
Numbers can be helpful for feedback, but they can also encourage people to force a sound. Stop if practice causes pain, tightness, loss of voice, or persistent hoarseness. A qualified speech-language professional can help with individualized and vocally safe goals.
